Ensuring Hoosier Students Have a Fair Shot at Affordable Higher Education

Posted on May 15, 2012 - 4:23pm

”THE INDIANA OPPORTUNITY TAX CREDIT”

In July, interest rates on subsidized Stafford Student Loans that almost eight million students use to pay for school will double from 3.4% to 6.8%. This will add approximately $1,000 for every year a student takes out a loan, adding up to approximately $4,000 over a four year education. Congress is currently debating whether to extend low student loan interest rates for another year while a long-term rate is negotiated. However, the bill has stalled in the United States Senate, and the gridlock may force these students to pay much more. The loan rate increase could cost Indiana students a total of 270 million dollars.

Indiana’s Commissioner for Higher Education Teresa Lubbers says keeping interest rates low, particularly while the economy is still recovering, is essential.‘All of the factors that impact the cost of college are critically important and linked to whether a student completes, she says. By 2020, 58% of the jobs in Indiana will require a certificate or a college degree. Currently, we have about 36% of the population who has a degree, so we are falling short. All of the factors that impact the cost of college are vitally important and linked to whether a student completes their education.

C&P POLITICAL NOTEBOOK: Indiana senate candidate calls for caps on political contributions

Posted on May 7, 2012 - 11:55am

As appeared in The Courier & Press, May 7, 2012

INDIANAPOLIS — A Democratic state Senate candidate wants to place a cap on the amount of money individuals and political action committees can donate to candidates for Indiana legislative and executive offices.

Terry White, the Warrick County Democratic chairman who is challenging state Sen. Vaneta Becker, R-Evansville, in the Senate's 50th District, said he wants caps just like the federal government has put in place.

"This 'wild west' atmosphere of Indiana campaigns is troubling and at the very least provides an appearance of impropriety, and it leads to the ultimate taxpayer discontent with the political process," he said.

Campaign Finance Reform

Posted on April 24, 2012 - 11:52am

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Evansville, IN --- Indiana State Senate Candidate Terry White held a press conference today on the topic of
campaign finance reform in downtown Evansville.

“Today, I wish to address the issue of campaign finance reform. Ratings for everyone in Washington as
well as Indianapolis are low, and voters are deeply pessimistic about the direction our government is headed.
Driving those sentiments, according to a new national survey conducted for Common Cause, is the belief that
special interests are still running the show and that voter’s voices are being drowned out by those that help fund
politicians’ campaigns.

C&P COMMUNITY COMMENT: Suspend sales tax on gas for 3 months

Posted on March 22, 2012 - 2:19pm

Community Comment by Terry White
As appeared in The Courier & Press, Mar 22, 2012

As a lifetime resident of Southern Indiana and candidate for State Senator in District 50, I have become keenly aware of the spiraling gas prices we anticipate will threaten to thwart vacation plans and slow our economic recovery in the immediate future.

While we all know gas prices climb about 5 percent in the summer, they already have risen steeply this year. Gas prices approaching $4 a gallon on average are causing severe economic pain for millions of Americans. Pump prices spiked 5 percent in the past month alone. Crude oil prices stood at $108 at the end of February, up from only double digits at the beginning of February.

Term Limits to the Indiana General Assembly

Posted on March 20, 2012 - 12:18pm

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: 812.480.8368

Evansville-Today, I wish to address the issue of legislative and campaign reform. If I am elected by the citizens of District 50 as their next state senator, it is my intention to offer legislation that seeks a constitutional amendment limiting the consecutive terms of legislative officeholders in both the Indiana House of Representatives as well as the State Senate.

The gist of the legislation will effectively allow a legislator from serving no more than 12 consecutive years in either house. It would limit the time in office of a state senator to 3 consecutive terms and that of a state representative to 6 consecutive terms.
